Conversant is turning 2
I'm offering 50% off paid subscriptions to celebrate. That's less than one coffee per month.
Dear Reader & Friend,
The Internet is insane. So many voices. So many videos, images, and memes.
I realize you could be reading 10,000 other newsletters than this one, which is why I want to thank you for supporting Conversant — whether you subscribed two days or two years ago.
When I joined Substack in September of 2022, I had little senes of how vital it would become to my writing life. Together, we’ve built a convivial community of readers, writers, and thinkers who care about words, ideas, and artistry.
I plan to continue sharing monthly (at least) essays about poetry, literature, jazz, pencils, God, etc. To celebrate this small milestone, I’m offering 50% off paid subscriptions through this weekend.
Conversant will remain free to all, but paid subscriptions do help. Alternatively, you could take a second to share this newsletter with a friend who might enjoy it. And again, thank you!
About Conversant
Conversant (adj): “familiar with or knowledgeable about something”
To the ear, conversant begins with the word converse, suggesting a link between our knowledge and dialogue with others. In fact, converse stems from older French and Latin words that meant “to live among” and “to keep company with.” Hence the original sense of conversant was something like, “habitually spending time in a particular place or with a particular person.”
Most of the essays I share here on Conversant are responses to the authors, artists, and musicians with whom I keep company. Really, that’s all the writing life is for me: reading, noticing, listening, then saying something in reply. Writing helps me come to terms—literally—with what I encounter in the world, especially the world of literature.
But I don’t write for myself only. In sharing these words with you, I hope you will carry on the conversation.
Sincerely,
Cameron
